Key Takeaways
- Agreed value, stated value and actual cash value are not interchangeable terms.
- A covered total-loss payment can still be affected by deductibles and retained salvage.
- Ask about commuting, storage, mileage and restoration work before choosing a collector policy.
Start with valuation, not the collector label
A classic or collector-car policy should state how the insurer will value a covered loss. Do not assume that an appraisal, the purchase price or an amount entered on an application guarantees the settlement. Collector prices can change; owning a classic car does not guarantee appreciation.
Hagerty’s own explanation distinguishes actual cash value from stated value and agreed value. Actual cash value considers the vehicle’s value at the time of loss. Its description of stated value allows payment of the stated amount or actual cash value, whichever is less. Agreed value sets a value with the insurer in advance for a covered total loss. Read your own contract because product wording can differ.
Read the payment conditions
Ask for the loss-settlement provision and a written example of a covered total loss. Even the insurer’s branded Guaranteed Value explanation notes deductions for an applicable deductible or retained salvage. A valuation provision does not remove exclusions or guarantee payment for an uncovered event.
Ask how partial damage, specialist labor, replacement parts and unfinished restoration work are handled. Keep photographs, appraisals, purchase records and restoration receipts to support the value you request.
Confirm the way you use and store the car
- Is commuting, routine shopping or other regular use allowed?
- Are there mileage, driver, garaging or security conditions?
- Does the policy accept modifications or a vehicle under restoration?
- Are shows, tours, transport, track use or racing covered or excluded?
- What liability coverage is required in your state, and do your selected limits meet it?
These are questions to verify, not restrictions that apply identically to every collector policy. Tell the insurer how you actually use the car.
Compare suitable quotes
Use the same valuation basis, liability limit and deductibles when comparing costs. Check the insured value at renewal after market changes or substantial restoration. Do not select a policy solely for an advertised discount or assume that an owner’s club membership guarantees savings.
